• Rust staining on the brick below the crown. HeatShield caps use a stainless collar, but the fasteners are often galvanized steel. In Frisco’s clay-heavy soil environment, that galvanizing corrodes in 6-10 years, the collar loosens, and cap tilt lets water run down the flue face. We see this pattern most in the older Starwood builds where the original caps were installed in the 2010s.
• Water in the firebox after rain, but only wind-driven rain. The cap mesh is intact but the lid has lifted or the side brackets have fatigued.
