Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Visible rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco’s 304 stainless resists corrosion, but the spot-welded corners and mesh screen frames are stress points. Once moisture gets behind the cap, it wicks down the flue and leaves telltale staining on brick or siding. In Frisco’s clay-heavy soils, that moisture can accelerate spalling on the crown below.
• Mesh screen pulled away from the frame or clogged solid with creosote. The spark-arrestor mesh on Gelco caps is 5/8″ weave, fine enough to stop embers but open enough to breathe. When it separates from the frame or packs with glazed creosote, draft suffers and back-puffing into the room becomes likely. We see this most on wood-burning installations in older Frisco homes with Class III creosote buildup.
• Cap sitting crooked, loose, or missing entirely after wind. Gelco’s standard outside-mount legs use tension screws against the flue tile. After years of thermal cycling, those screws back out or the flue tile itself cracks at the pressure points. The WR wind-resistant series uses a band-clamp system that’s more secure, but even those fail if the underlying flue is compromised.
• Water dripping on the firebox or rust forming on the damper. A cap’s primary job is keeping water out of the flue system. Once the seal degrades, rain runs straight down to the smoke shelf and damper assembly.
