Famco Damper Repair: The Frisco Owner’s Guide

The damper sits right above the firebox and seals the flue when your fireplace isn’t in use. On Famco units, it’s usually a throat damper with a cast-iron or steel plate that pivots on a rod controlled by a handle or chain. When that plate warps, the frame cracks, or the pivot mechanism seizes, you’re losing heated air up the chimney in winter and letting conditioned air escape in summer. In Frisco’s clay-heavy soils, subtle foundation shifts over years can stress the damper frame, which is why we see more frame cracks here than in areas with sandier ground.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco doesn’t use a single universal damper design across its product lines, so matching the right part matters. The most common units we encounter in Frisco homes are the Famco 8-inch, 10-inch, and 13-inch throat dampers, plus the larger 16-inch and 18-inch models found in the bigger hearths around Starwood and Newman Village. The critical measurement is the inside width of the flue throat, not the damper plate itself, which is typically 1/2 to 3/4 inch smaller to allow pivot clearance.

Check for a stamped model number on the damper frame’s left side (facing the firebox) or on the handle bracket. If corrosion has eaten the stamp, measure throat width, depth, and the rod diameter, usually 5/16 or 3/8 inch. Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Smoke rolling into the room on startup. The damper plate isn’t opening fully, or it’s hanging crooked from a bent pivot rod. Partial obstruction kills draft before the flue warms, and in Frisco’s tight new construction with energy-efficient homes, there’s even less makeup air to compensate.
• Cold downdraft even with the damper “closed.” The plate has warped from heat cycling or the frame has cracked, leaving a gap that lets outside air pour down. We measure these gaps with a feeler gauge during our camera-scan inspection, anything over 1/8 inch is functionally open.
• Handle spins freely or jams completely. The worm gear or chain drive has stripped, or the pivot rod has corroded where it passes through the frame. This is the most common failure mode we see on Famco units after 12-15 years in North Texas humidity.
• Rust particles or orange staining in the firebox. Moisture is getting past a compromised damper seal and condensing on the metal. In Frisco, this accelerates when homeowners run sprinklers against exterior chimney walls during summer, the thermal mass stays cool and wicks moisture inward.
• Audible rattling or clanking when the wind blows. The plate has detached from one pivot point and is flapping loose. This will eventually fall into the firebox or lodge sideways, blocking the flue entirely.

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can visually inspect the damper plate from the firebox with a flashlight, check if the handle moves smoothly through its full range, and measure throat dimensions if you’re comfortable on a step stool. What you cannot safely do is remove or replace the assembly. The damper frame is mortared into the smoke chamber throat, and working overhead with loose masonry above your face is a genuine hazard. The pivot rod also sits in high-tension alignment, a stuck plate can release suddenly when freed.
