Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• Smoke spillage at startup. If smoke enters the room when you first light the fire, the liner may have separated at a joint or corroded through at the smoke chamber. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. An owner can verify the liner label band, measure approximate flue diameter with a tape, and check the chase crown for obvious cracks or pooling water. These observations help us prepare, but they do not replace inspection.

The hard stop is installation. Gelco liners ship as coiled stainless or aluminized steel that must be tension-straightened down a flue without kinking, with insulation packed continuously to maintain UL 1777 clearance ratings. The top termination requires cutting and sealing to the chimney cap or chase cover, often on a ladder at roofline. A kinked liner or poorly sealed top creates a carbon monoxide pathway into the home.
