Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on the firebox walls below the damper. The crown’s primary job is to shed water away from the flue opening. When the seal between crown and liner degrades, water follows the liner down and exits at the first gap it finds, usually the damper frame or smoke shelf junction.
- White efflorescence or salt deposits on exterior chase brick or siding. This means water is getting past the crown, saturating the chase interior, and leaching minerals through the masonry. In Frisco’s clay-heavy soils, this freeze-thaw cycling accelerates chase deterioration faster than in drier Texas markets.
- Rust flakes or corrosion at the liner top, visible from the roofline. DuraFlex stainless resists rust well, but a failed crown exposes the liner collar to standing water. Once surface rust appears at the crown interface, the liner wall thickness is already compromised at that point.
- Draft problems or smoke spillage on startup. A degraded crown can allow enough water intrusion to partially block the flue with debris, or the crown collar itself can shift, creating an obstruction at the flue terminus that disrupts proper draft.
- Visible gaps or separation between the crown collar and the chase top concrete. The caulked joint here is a maintenance item, not permanent. Texas sun and hail degrade it in 5-8 years. Once the gap opens, water enters directly, and the repair escalates from crown kit to crown kit plus chase top rebuild.
